Resident Eagles: Abby & Blaze

Who's Who?

Abby (L) & Blaze (R)

Abby (Abigail) and Blaze (Blazer) are the resident eagles here at Eagle Country. They have been paired since the 2021-2022 season and are currently rearing their second clutch, Swampy and Meadow.

If you are new to Eagle Country and especially eagle watching in general, one of the very first questions you might ask is, “How do I tell the eagles apart?” At first glance, they look so similar! Looking very close, however, you can spot differences to help you distinguish who is who.

Please keep in mind that various factors such as sunlight, cloudiness, shadows and the angle of their head/body can affect what we see from one moment to the next. Once you see them enough, or keep referring to this information :), they will become familiar.

Immense gratitude to our EC Team who helped in compiling these teachings and photos!

Abby’s Features

  • Abby’s eyes are lighter in color than Blaze’s deeper golden yellow color.
  • Abby’s front neckline has been described as rectangular, jagged, inverted, and M-shaped.
  • Abby has a scrape/dent on the left side of her beak.
  • Abby does not have “yellow” eyebrows.
  • As observed beginning in November 2023, Abby periodically squints her right eye. It has not affected her capabilities.

BLAZE

Blaze’s Features

  • Blaze’s eyes are a deeper golden yellow. They have often been described as more “animated.
  • Blaze’s head is flatter across the top when viewed from certain angles.
  • Blaze has “yellow” eyebrows.
  • When the camera is very close up, we can see that Blaze has speckles on the iris of his right eye, and one speckle on his left iris at about 3 o’clock.

Eagle Country eagle cams are LIVE for the 2023-2024 season!

Following the unfortunate incident when Hurricane Ian brought down the nest tree that Blaze and Abby once occupied, we’ve been eagerly awaiting to see where they might choose to rebuild. Throughout the last season, we observed their presence, but as much as we hoped there would be immediate rebuilding, there was no clear “established nest,” and regrettably, no eaglets.

However, at last we are delighted to report that they are constructing a new nest in a fresh location on our family’s property, approximately 700 feet southwest of the old nest site. The tree they’ve selected is robust and has weathered numerous storms. In like manner to the eagles, we’ve revitalized our equipment and installed our eagle cams in and around this tree, believing it will become their new nest site. As we rebuild, we plan to add more features. Currently, you can enjoy our Nest Cam, Bayhead Cam, Remote Tree Cam, and our beloved Cow Cam.

The future was uncertain, but it brings us immense delight to witness their long-awaited return.

We’re excited to once again share with you the majesty of the American bald eagles.

Season #5 Info

Season #5 2022-2023 was abruptly discontinued by the unfortunate loss of the nest tree/equipment in Hurricane Ian. Throughout the year, we spotted eagles in the area intermittently. It wasn’t until late spring that we suspected they may possibly rebuild in the bayhead area. Excited at the possibility, we refurbished equipment, installed the new camera set-up and system … and waited! It appears Abby & Blaze are indeed building in the tree and we are thrilled!

Season #4 Recap

Season #4 proved to be successful! We were thrilled when Abby & Blaze finally confirmed their pairing. It was interesting to see the personalities and habits of Abby & Blaze and how they differed from Vic & Nic. Fern & Thunder seemed to thrive and fledged successfully. We hope their adventures are continuing on! To see fun early videos of Fern & Thunder, click here: Media

FAQs:

We receive many questions about the eagles, the history of the nest and on-camera sights and sounds. Many of these questions we have tried to answer below.

Who Is Eagle Country?2023-11-18T02:13:09+05:00

Eagle Country is a small group of people in SW Florida who love God and love eagles! We simply wanted to share the enjoyment we receive from watching the eagles with all of our Friends of Eagle Country! If you’re here, we’re glad!

You can read a little more about us here: Who Is Eagle Country? Have some fun and view this season’s videos as well as some from older seasons here: Eagle Country Media

When did EC eagle cams start?2023-11-17T23:19:35+05:00

Eagle Country eagle cams started in 2018. Eagles have been in the area for many, many years and after Hurricane Irma, we decided to share them with viewers after witnessing their resilience in rebuilding!

What happened to the nest cam tree?2023-10-20T20:10:05+05:00

The nest cam tree fell when Hurricane Ian hit in the fall of 2022. Interestingly enough, we are finding that the new nesting site in the bayhead area of the property looks very similar on camera!

What happened to Victoria & Nicholas?2021-10-21T15:34:02+05:00

The 2020-2021 season brought many unexpected turns of events. We believe we had a sighting of Nicholas prior to cams going live, but we are not certain. We believe we may have seen Victoria early on, but again, we are not certain. All we do know is that they did not return for the nesting season. Although we don’t know their fate or whereabouts, we like to think they are simply enjoying their adventures elsewhere!

If you were fond of Vic & Nic and would like to revisit their story, you can read about and view them here: Vic & Nic

Who are the resident eagles?2023-10-20T20:07:53+05:00

Abby & Blaze! In the 2020-2021 season, Nic & Vic did not return to the nest for unknown reasons. In their absence, a nesting pair did not emerge from the many suitors and territorial disputes. In the 2021-2022 season, Abby & Blaze became the resident pair and in their first nesting season saw two eaglets, Fern & Thunder, successfully fledge. As of the beginning of the 2023-2024 season, Abby & Blaze have returned to build in a new nest tree after losing their nest and nest tree in Hurricane Ian in the fall of 2022.

Am I hearing gunshots?2021-10-12T15:49:51+05:00

This nest located in the country on private property and is also a working ranch. Because it is in the country, sound really travels. While the shots may seem loud and close on cam, they are not. Also, the shots do not pose a threat to the eagles.

Why am I seeing so many mosquitos and bugs?2021-10-12T15:49:39+05:00

This nest is located near very swampy areas of Florida. Along with swamp conditions comes times of dense mosquitos and various bugs in the air. It is not uncommon to have a short period of time in the evenings (often 15-20ish minutes) of a sort of “swarm” of mosquitos. After this, although not swarm-like, the air is still thick with flying insects. The eagles are used to it and although they shift, scratch and “wave away” much like we would, they have learned how to deal with them.

Can the eagles see the IR lights at night?2021-10-21T15:34:57+05:00

The eagles cannot see the IR light at night because it is invisible to them. In fact, if you were to stand under the tree at night, it would be completely dark outside!

Where is this nest located?2021-10-21T15:34:37+05:00

This eagle’s nest is located on private property, which is also a small working cattle ranch, near a large state park in southwest Florida. Eagle Country is made up of a small group of people who love God, love His people and love eagles. The ranch has been in the family for generations and the nest has been on the property for around 20 years.
