Eagle Country Viewing Guidelines

A Friendly Warning To Friends of Eagle Country:

Viewing the eagles’ nest can be very graphic in nature!

When you watch a National Geographic show, whether it’s about orangutans, great white sharks, lions of the African plains or American Bald Eagles, you are always in for surprises. You are brought right into the daily lives of the animals and experience “first hand” what it’s like to live in their nest, den or ocean depth. However, nature is wild, untamed and unfiltered. So, in one sitting you may witness some of the most incredible beauty and in the next moment, some of the greatest tragedy – all up close!

Warning!

Nature is wild, untamed and unfiltered. So, in one sitting you may witness some of the most incredible beauty and in the next moment, some of the greatest tragedy – all up close!

The same principles apply here as when you view animal programs on your tv. Having eagle cams provides a visit into an eagles’ nest that you otherwise couldn’t have. These beautiful creatures are seen in all of their majesty, from nest building to laying and hatching eggs to the hopeful fledging of the young eagles.

However, wildlife is wild. There are often intruder attempts by snakes, fox squirrels, owls, raccoons or even other eagles. You can view many snippets of such events on our Media or Youtube page. When eggs are laid, you may witness the intruders fight for and even take the eggs right from the nest. Once hatched, eaglets have a fifty percent chance of survival in their first year of life. It’s very difficult to watch, but nature may play hardball and the mother eagle may reject one of her young to preserve the well being of the other. Or, sadly, you may witness one eaglet pummel its sibling in order to take its portion of food.

Nature is wild and there is simply no predicting what may unfold. With that in mind, we want to caution you as you view that, just like a National Geographic show, you can simply change the channel if nature takes a turn that is hard to watch. However, it won’t change the course of nature. You may want to be aware of possible scenarios that could potentially exist when children are present and use wisdom you deem appropriate as to “view or not to view” any particular event.

We love our eagles and want to share them with the world. But you must be aware that they are wild eagles – unpredictable and untamed. Therefore, be prepared for anything. As the American Eagle Foundation says, “While we hope that all eaglets hatched in this nest will grow up healthy and successfully fledge each season, things like sibling rivalry, predators, and natural disaster can affect this eagle family and may be difficult to watch.” Knowing that, it is also our firm conviction NOT to intervene in the natural process of the eagles’ life cycle. We must allow nature to be natural.

So, as Eagle Country Friends, we felt it important to remind our viewers that eagle cams can depict both the beautiful lifestyle of eagles as well as the difficult narratives that may occur when nature truly displays naturally.
