Season 7: Nest Life at Eagle Country

Abby Did Not Return

Season 7 brought the Eagle Country community yet another surprise and turn of events. It was apparent from the start of the season that the female eagle we were seeing was not Abby.

After spending time carefully observing, with the help of our dedicated moderators and the larger Eagle Country community, we determined that the female eagle we had grown to know and appreciate as Abby had not returned. As with past resident changes, we have no way of definitively knowing what became of Abby, whether good or ill.

What we do know is that we shared several meaningful seasons with her and Blaze and welcomed adorable eaglets — Fern and Thunder, and Swampy and Meadow.

We reiterated again the nature of observing live wildlife cams. They are unpredictable and wild, in the truest sense.

Skye: The New Resident Female

It was not long after observing Blaze with this new female to establish that they were a bonded pair. Their nesting behaviors reflected those of a true pair, as they continued to build the nest, mate, and display signs consistent with the possibility of laying eggs and raising young.

Frequent Owl Attacks

During the course of the season, great horned owls made their presence known. For instance, there were several occasions where the owls knocked the eagles off their perches as they slept. We have documented numerous occasions on EC YouTube channel as well as across our socials. It was alarming to witness, and the frequency of these attacks was steady. Despite this, Skye and Blaze remained at the nest and continued to act as a bonded pair.

Season Closing and Conclusion

Skye and Blaze remained in and around the nest area until spring. By that time, it was apparent that they would not lay eggs. As a result of this, they continued on in their natural instincts and eventually, we saw them very infrequently on the live cams.

While we did not see eaglets this season, we witnessed many memorable moments of nest building and eagle interaction. It was a learning experience to observe how Great Horned Owl interactions became part of the story, illustrating how the lives of wild birds often intertwine.

Every season with all of its nuances and uniqueness brings its own lessons and opportunities for all of us viewers, novice and seasoned alike, to learn something new.
